Devils Lake Police investigating death at jail

National Guardsman who took his life was arrested on sexual assault, luring charges

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — The Devils Lake Police Department is investigating the death of an inmate at a jail in the city.

Cody Allen Ingebreston, 30, of Carrington, N.D., died by suicide Thursday night while being held at the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center, a police investigator said Monday, Nov. 2.

The LEC is conducting its own investigation, Jail Director Rob Johnson said.

Ingebreston was booked into Wednesday night into the LEC on suspicion of sexual assault involving a child between the ages of 15 and 18 years old, as well as luring minors by computer, according to jail logs.The Foster County State’s Attorney Office filed a criminal complaint against Ingebreston on Thursday, but the charges were dismissed after his death.

Ingebreston completed basic training for the North Dakota Army National Guard in 2010.

This isn’t the first time an inmate in Devils Lake has taken their life. John W. Wilkie Jr., 42, was found dead around 6:30 a.m. May 16, 2015, after being booked into the jail six hours earlier for detoxification. He was not charged with a crime.

His death was was attributed to suicide by consuming a mixture of medications, but his family sued the jail, claiming staff could have prevented his death. The lawsuit was later settled out of court.

David James Grove, 57, took his life at the jail Sept. 2, 2018, after being accused of possessing child pornography.
